With a base of 1,121 square kilometers, Mt. Elgon in Eastern Uganda is the world’s largest mountain caldera rising to 4321M. Believed to have erupted over 24 million years ago Mt. Elgon’s highest peak is Wagagai in Uganda. Allow us give you for a 6 day adventure on this African giant exploring scenic trails of nature, wildlife and culture as your take on her gentle slopes, over 300 bird species, caves, hot springs, the Sipi falls and finally the Peak. Mt. Elgon is home to The world’s only Fox’s weaver bird Uganda’s only mane-less zebras Uganda’s only cheetahs.
Itinerary
A guide from Phmsseb tours will pick you from Entebbe airport and check you in to your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala.
Day 1 Destination Mt. Elgon Base
Morning [4-5 Hours] Pick up from your hotel and travel by car towards Eastern Uganda; making a stopover at Sezibwa Falls and the source of the Nile in Jinja.Â
Mid-morning [1 hour] We’ll have an early lunch in Jinja then proceed to Mbale in Eastern Uganda
Evening: Arrive in Mbale and check into your hotel at the Base of Mount Elgon.
Day 2 Destination Tutum Cave
Set off from your Hotel towards Tutum cave using the Sipi trail. Expect to see monkeys, Baboons, waterbucks, countless bird species. We’ll make a stopover at Chebonet waterfalls, Kapkwai cave, Wiri ridge and finally explore and sleep at Tutum cave.
Day 3 Destination Kajeri Camp
After breakfast at Tutum, take in the mountain again towards Kajeri camp enjoying more wildlife and the bamboo forest along the path. This journey covers about 17kms [10.5 miles] You’ll camp at Kajeri 3,383 meters above sea level.
Day 4 Destination Mude Cave
After breakfast at Kajeri, set off on a 21km [13miles] journey towards Mude Cave. You’ll trek through virgin mountain vegetation overlook valleys like Muyembe, reach Mubiyi Peak, see the Dirigana falls and sipi river, giant rocks, the caldera and the siyo cave. You’ll spend the night 3500 meters above sea level at Mude cave camp.
Day 5 Destination Wagagai Mountain Peak.
After Breakfast at Mude cave, we take on the highest point of the mountain – Wagagai which stands 4321 Meters above sea level. We take it slow due to challenges like altitude illness of some tourists. We descend back to Mude Cave.
Day 6 Destination Sipi Falls
After Breakfast at Mude cave, we’ll descend the mountain and transfer to Sipi Falls for more breathtaking views. Spend the night at a lodge near the falls.
Day 7 Destination Entebbe Airport
After enjoying the sunrise at Sipi Falls, we’ll drive you back to Entebbe Airport or you take you to another gem nearby
